Rankings update: Anthony Joshua and Keith Thurman notch important wins

Heavyweight

Anthony Joshua made a successful first defence of his IBF world title against unranked Dominic Breazeale at the O2 Arena in London. Currently ranked sixth, the unbeaten 26-year-old now has his title reign underway and will be looking to push on against stiffer opposition.

Super-middleweight

George Groves (No 5) outpointed Martin Murray (No 10) in an enveloping crossroads meeting on the Joshua undercard. As Groves did not beat anyone above him nor did Murray lose to anyone below him, neither man moves in the rankings.

Middleweight

Daniel Geale – who was previously ranked ninth – is removed for being inactive for a year. No 10 Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam moves into his place and Chris Eubank Jnr – who stopped Tom Doran this weekend – moves into the vacant 10th spot.

The Brightonian is currently pursuing a fight with No 3 Gennady Golovkin.

Welterweight

Arguably the most salient fight of the past weekend took place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York when Keith Thurman retained his WBA title against Shawn Porter.

Thurman leapfrogged Porter into third place in the rankings. Their fight was thrilling from start to finish and painfully close at the time of the final bell.

Super-featherweight

Unranked Jason Sosa upset Javier Fortuna to take his No 6 ranking. Everyone else moves down a space and former No 10 Jose Pedraza leaves to make room for the new entrant.
