THE build-up to Manny Pacquiao’s April 9 fight with Tim Bradley remains mired in controversy. Pacquiao was one of the world’s most popular sportsmen but his homophobic remarks drew such widespread condemnation he was dropped by sportswear giant Nike.
As well as his upcoming fight, Pacquiao is running for one of the seats in the Senate, the upper house of parliament in the Philippines. But, as Reuters reports, Walden Bello, a rival of Pacquiao’s for one of those Senate seats, has asked the electoral commission in their country to look at whether the publicity around his April 9 bout will give Manny an unfair advantage in the election, which takes place on May 9. Bello is therefore asking for Pacquiao to postpone the Bradley fight until a later date.
The electoral commission in the Philippines will make their decision on Tuesday.
