Paying tribute to Jackie Brown

JACKIE BROWN, a former British and Commonwealth flyweight champion, sadly passed away on January 12 at the age of 84.

Brown, who turned pro in 1958 after claiming a gold medal at that year’s Commonwealth Games, emigrated to Sydney in 2009. He was diagnosed with dementia not long after moving to Australia.

The popular Edinburgh man compiled a record of 32-10-1 (10) during an eight-year professional career. After outpointing future Scottish star Walter McGowan in 1961, Brown did the same to former victim Brian Cartwright in 1962 to pick up the British belt. He added the Commonwealth crown to his collection later that year by outscoring Orizu Obilaso. The following year, McGowan relieved him of his two titles.
