Paris Olympian Lewis Richardson glides through pro debut

LEWIS Richardson made tidy work of his professional debut, raising the curtain of a promising career under Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions banner.

It was the 28-year-old’s first outing since his somewhat contentious split decision defeat to Marco Verde, another talented professional prospect, at last year’s Paris Games.

Nevertheless, the loss saw Richardson claim an Olympic bronze medal and, in doing so, become the only member of GB Boxing to secure a place on the podium.

His first professional assignment, meanwhile, arrived on the undercard of Fabio Wardley vs Justis Huni at Portman Road – home of Ipswich Town Football Club – earlier this evening.

The opening proceedings saw Richardson utilise his superior speed, setting a blistering pace against Estonian journeyman Dmitri Protkunas without needing to go through the gears.

A more advanced skill set was then displayed in the fourth round, with the feet of Richardson dancing rings around his more limited opponent.

Sure enough, the following two rounds each told a similar story before the spindly southpaw – encountering few hurdles along the way – secured his 60-54 victory through six rounds.

He will know, of course, that far tougher tests are just around the corner, while tonight’s performance showcased, if nothing else, a few glimpses of his talent.

Being just around the corner from his hometown, too, signs of the Colchester man’s potential as a prolific ticket seller shone brightly.

Either way, there is certainly plenty to look forward to when it comes to the career of Richardson who, while debuting at 160lbs, may look to test himself down at super-welterweight before long.
