IN what was supposed to represent the toughest test of his career to date, Cuba’s Osleys Iglesias was far too fresh and ferocious for Vladimir Shishkin, dominating the Russian en route to an eighth-round finish.
Experienced referee Michael Griffin called off the Montreal Casino headliner at 1-28 of the eighth (scheduled for 12) as Iglesias’ dominance began to show physically and mentally on Shishkin. Retaining his IBO super-middleweight crown, Iglesias was ahead 70-63 on all three cards at the time of the stoppage.
The German-based southpaw has his sights clearly set on a fight with Canelo Alvarez, which sounds a little far-fetched, but no less ambitious. Iglesias is now 14-0 (13 KOs) and was never in any trouble against Shishkin, 16-2 (10 KOs), who previously challenged for the IBF title against William Scull, who went on to face Canelo in a drab affair.
Elsewhere on the Canadian undercard, Dzmitry Asanau won his 11th pro fight, halting France’s Laid Douadi, who lost for the first time in 29 outings.
‘The Future’ Avery Martin Duval showed that his future is indeed bright as he pasted Mexican ‘Tornado’ Luis Campos Cortez in five rounds.
Jhon Orobio and Moreno Fendero both won their respective bouts by third-round knockout. Former Olympian Wyatt Sanford won on points over six rounds.
