O’Shaquie Foster-Stephen Fulton to clear WBC route for Bruce Carrington

FEATHERWEIGHT contender Bruce Carrington is poised to earn a shot at world honours before long, with WBC champion Stephen Fulton expected to face O’Shaquie Foster.

It is widely reported that the showdown – which should see Foster, 23-3 (12 KOs), put his WBC world super-featherweight title on the line – will land on August 16.

As a result, Fulton, 23-1 (8 KOs), is likely to forfeit his championship status at 126lbs and, in doing so, allow Rey Vargas to regain his old strap.

According to the WBC’s June update, Vargas – who was made ‘champion in recess’ following a leg injury – will soon make a voluntary defence of the green and gold belt against Carlos Castro.

Despite twice dropping to the canvas, the Mexican retained his title in March of last year, coming away from his encounter against Nick Ball with a highly-contentious draw.

Carrington, 15-0 (9 KOs), meanwhile, is gearing up for a WBC interim title fight against Namibia’s Mateus Heita, an unbeaten but largely unproven operator, on July 26.

Should he come through that, it has been stated by the sanctioning body that the 28-year-old will then face the winner of Vargas vs Castro for the full WBC title.

Carrington, to his credit, has long been clamouring for his title shot while, at the same time, possessing a resume that fails to prove his world-level credentials.

His assignment next month, however, will be the outspoken American’s first 12-round contest, featuring on the undercard of Xander Zayas vs Jorge Perez.

A dustup between Vargas and Carrington, then, is likely to unfold in the not too distant future, with Fulton, on the other hand, looking to become a three-division world champion.
