CANELO ALVAREZ and his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, have thrown down the gauntlet at Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr’s feet over a potential all-Mexican fight on May 6.
The two sides have been in talks for several weeks – despite De La Hoya currently suing Chavez’s manager Al Haymon – though a deal has not yet been reached.
However, a date has been nailed down, with Golden Boy Promotions seeking to secure the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for May 6, with the intention of Canelo headlining a show there – preferably against Chavez Jnr.

Chavez Jnr had previously tweeted that the money being floated for his purse was not enough, and he also criticised Canelo for previously vacating his WBC middleweight title, rather than fighting Gennady Golovkin.
In a peculiar twist, Canelo and Chavez Jnr – Mexico’s two most popular active fighters – would meet at a catchweight around the 165lb mark. Alvarez had previously turned down the prospect of fighting unified middleweight champion Golovkin as he was not yet big enough, instead electing to dethrone WBO super-welter champion Liam Smith last September.
