CANELO ALVAREZ and his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, have thrown down the gauntlet at Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr’s feet over a potential all-Mexican fight on May 6.

The two sides have been in talks for several weeks – despite De La Hoya currently suing Chavez’s manager Al Haymon – though a deal has not yet been reached.

However, a date has been nailed down, with Golden Boy Promotions seeking to secure the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for May 6, with the intention of Canelo headlining a show there – preferably against Chavez Jnr.

Junior, we gave you the opportunity to fight @Canelo. Your manager has the contract. Stop tweeting lies, go sign and we’ll be on for May 6. https://t.co/GvQIMWdCzG

Chavez Jnr had previously tweeted that the money being floated for his purse was not enough, and he also criticised Canelo for previously vacating his WBC middleweight title, rather than fighting Gennady Golovkin.

In a peculiar twist, Canelo and Chavez Jnr – Mexico’s two most popular active fighters – would meet at a catchweight around the 165lb mark. Alvarez had previously turned down the prospect of fighting unified middleweight champion Golovkin as he was not yet big enough, instead electing to dethrone WBO super-welter champion Liam Smith last September.

@jcchavezjr1 no dejes que te traten como a un niño, el contrato lo tiene tu gente desde ayer fírmalo y que se haga la pelea

“Don’t let them treat you like a kid. Your people have had the contract since yesterday. Sign it so we can make the fight happen,” Canelo wrote to Chavez on Twitter.
The plan is, allegedly, for Canelo to fight Golovkin in September, though nothing is set in stone and at this stage it is just a verbal agreement. ‘GGG’ will face Danny Jacobs at Madison Square Garden on March 18, in what will be his second HBO pay-per-view bout.
Canelo is still recovering from a hand injury he sustained while stopping Smith, and Chavez Jnr claimed he will begin training camp today for his next fight, whatever it might be.
