A clash between Oleksandr Usyk and Deontay Wilder could be around the corner, and when asked to describe the American, Usyk revealed his main concerns for the fight using only three words.
Usyk has twice overcome each of Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Daniel Dubois to establish himself as the standout heavyweight of this generation. As well as the above, when the key fighters of this era are named in the future, Deontay Wilder is sure to be mentioned.
The Ukrainian had been expected to take on Joseph Parker on his next outing, but an upset defeat to Fabio Wardley has scuppered those plans and, rather than face the undefeated Brit, Usyk decided to vacate his WBO world title in order to select his next opponent himself.
To the surprise of many, it seems as though Wilder is at the top of the hit-list, despite the fact that the Tuscaloosa-born terroriser has lost his touch of late and has come up short in four of his last six outings.
Speaking to DAZN Boxing, when asked to describe Wilder in three words last year, Usyk revealed what he associates with the 38-year-old; recognising the undeniable punch power of one of boxing’s most fearsome knockout artists since the turn of the millennium.
“Power. Right hand.”
Usyk has revealed plans to fight until he is 41 years old, but with Wilder likely only one defeat away from retirement, it is understandable why the now unified heavyweight ruler wants to add the name of the former WBC champion to his résumé whilst he still can.
