THERE’S set to be an exciting new addition to the domestic bantamweight ranks.
Nyall ‘Non Stop’ Berry says he intends to target titles at 118lbs after winning English super-bantamweight honours.
The 26-year-old from Birmingham is back in action in a six-rounder on Murray International Promotions’ show at Cannock Chase Leisure Centre on Saturday, September 13 – and says he wants to fight for a bantamweight belt by the end of the year.
“I was 120lbs when I won the English title (with a third-round stoppage of Lewis Frimpong at the York Hall in March) and I made the weight easily,” said Berry, who is trained and managed by Birmingham’s man-about-boxing Jon Pegg at the Eastside gym.
“I could probably get down to super-flyweight, but that would drain me.”
Berry has six early wins on his 14-1 pro record and is convinced he will take his power down to 118lbs where the British and Commonwealth belts are held by Andrew Cain.
The shaven-headed Scouser has 12 early wins on his 14-1 record and Berry said: “He looks a handful, but he might be looking to move on and the titles could become free.
“I just want to see what titles I can get.”
Berry says if he didn’t believe he could win the world title, he would quit boxing.
He said: “If I didn’t think I could be a world champion, what would be the point?
“This sport is hard, very hard. I would be better off without it. But it’s what I want to do. This is the life I chose.”
