JAIME Munguia will fight Sergey Derevyanchenko in a middleweight contest on June 10.

The Mexican 41-0 (33) has been linked to top tier opponents in recent times with his career in need of an acid test. Gennadiy Golovkin and Jermall Charlo have been two mentioned but never has a deal seemed likely.

Instead, Derevyanchenko 14-4 (10), will hope to show at 37-years-old he has enough to give the unbeaten Munguia a hard night’s work at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California. Golden Boy Promotions will stage the event.

“I am very excited to return to the ring and even more excited to face a fighter like Derevyanchenko,” said Munguia.

“I think it will be a very intense fight from start to finish, but like always we are training very hard and are very ready to give the fans a very exciting fight. We will see you this June 10 in Southern California!”

Despite having had 41 fights Munguia is short on experience against high calibre opposition. The crowd pleasing 26-year-old has beaten the likes of Liam Smith (at 154lbs), Dennis Hogan, Tureano Johnson and Gabriel Rosado in the past. Last time out Munguia knocked out Gonzalo Gaston Coria last November.

Derevyanchenko has mixed at a much higher level giving Golovkin one of the toughest fights of his career in 2019. The Ukrainian also went the distance with Daniel Jacobs, ‘Mall Charlo and Carlos Adames (over 10 rounds). However, those were all defeats, but the 2008 Olympian returned to winning ways last time out against Joshua Conley.

“I’ve been in some of the biggest middleweight title fights over the last few years and as my fans know I always come to fight,” Derevyanchenko.

“I feel like the GGG fight a few years ago was a fight that should have gone my way, so getting back to a title fight and becoming a world champion is my main goal. Mungia is a great fighter and a win over him gets me back on track to winning a world title. June 10 will be a war, a bloodbath, and I’m willing to give it everything I’ve got to come away victorious. I will be looking to get this win for myself but also for my country, Ukraine.”
