The WBC is poised to order a final eliminator between Moses Itauma and one of his domestic rivals, hoping to put the winner in a position to challenge for Oleksandr Usyk’s green and gold strap.
While having vacated his WBO world title – which was then awarded to Fabio Wardley – Usyk still holds three of the four major belts in the land of the giants.
One of them is the WBC trinket, which the Ukrainian claimed following a monumental points victory over Tyson Fury in May 2024.
Agit Kabayel has worked his way into a favourable position following his sixth-round finish over Zhilei Zhang in February. In theory, the German’s WBC interim title should make him the leading contender for Usyk, who may choose to either vacate the belt or honour his mandatory obligation.
But while Kabayel has rightfully earned his shot at world honours, the WBC is now expected to order a final elimination bout between Itauma and Lawrence Okolie.

Former world cruiserweight champion Okolie is currently the WBC’s number-one ranked contender, sitting just behind Kabayel. Itauma, who is also highly ranked with the WBA, is perhaps set to explore a different route.
Ultimately, the contest between Itauma and Okolie — both promoted by Queensberry — seems unlikely to materialise. Should the fight come to fruition, it is highly possible that the winner of Itauma-Okolie would face Kabayel with Usyk’s future plans still unclear. The Ukrainian revealed recently that he wants to face former champion Deontay Wilder.
