Mikael Lawal: ‘I started boxing to control my anger’

When and why you started boxing:
I started boxing when I was 17 years old. I did it to control my anger management issues more than anything else.

Favourite all-time fighter:
The GOAT, Muhammad Ali of course. He’s my favourite fighter because of the things he did inside and outside of the ring. He’s a real inspiration.

Best fight you’ve seen:
The first fight between Dwight Muhammad Qawi and Evander Holyfield, when Holyfield won the WBA cruiserweight title in 1986. It was an absolute war.

Personal career highlight:
My best achievement so far is winning the Ultimate Boxxer 4 cruiserweight tournament [with victories over Antony Woolery, David Jamieson and Damian Chambers in July last year].

Toughest opponent:
My toughest opponent is myself. No one can hit harder than me.

Best and worst attributes as a boxer:
My best attributes are a secret… and so are my worst.

Training tip:
It’s more important to train smart rather than hard.

Favourite meal/restaurant:
I love the food at Brazilian rodizio restaurants. The meat is out of this world.

Best friends in boxing:
Professional light-heavyweight Kola Koyejo.

Other sportsperson you would like to be:
Lewis Hamilton. I think I’d be a very good car racer due to my temperament and control.

Last film/TV show you saw:
I’ve recently been watching [series] The Boys on Amazon Prime.

Who would play you in a film of your life:
Michael B. Jordan would be the man to do that. He was amazing in Creed.

Have you ever been starstruck:
I was starstruck when I met Evander Holyfield in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Last time you cried:
The last time I cried was when my mum passed away.

Best advice received:
When it comes to money, you should save, save, save.

Worst rumour about yourself:
That I can’t punch!

Something not many people know about you:
I’ve got two cats.
