Miguel Cotto breaks his silence

MIGUEL COTTO broke his silence after losing a thrilling, but close fight with Canelo Alvarez on Saturday (November 21) night in Las Vegas.

The Puerto Rican icon left the ring without talking to any media and also failed to attend the post-fight press conference.

His trainer, Freddie Roach, was vocal in his disapproval of the result: “We had a gameplan to outbox him and we did that. His [Cotto] defence was impeccable and he threw lots of good combinations. I don’t know what those scores were about. I thought we had the edge at the end but it went the other way.”

“Those scores” were in reference to the crazy one-sided nature of the judges’ tallies. Burt Clements’ 118-110 and Dave Moretti’s 119-109 were borderline absurd, while John McKale had it 117-111 to Mexico’s new WBC middleweight champion.

After a two hour connection in Philadelphia, Cotto landed in his native Puerto Rico in the early hours of Monday morning and told the island’s Raul Alzaga of Primera Hora “When you have the opportunity to dominate eight of the twelve rounds, you don’t expect anything less than victory.”

Before this, Cotto’s only reaction to the decision was “Wow!” as soon as it was announced.

Mexican news outlet La Prensa was scathing in it’s criticism of the outcome, branding it ‘Robbery in Las Vegas’ where they also lay blame at Canelo’s corner for the perceived loss.
