UNIFIED minimumweight king Oscar Collazo hopes to extend his scintillating surge when he returns against Mexican contender Edwin Cano on March 29.

The pair will collide in the co-main event of a Golden Boy card in Cancún, Mexico, with William Zepeda headlining the show in a rematch against Tevin Farmer.

Collazo, 11-0 (8 KOs), comes off an emphatic victory over Thammanoon Niyomtrong, flooring his man three times en route to a destructive seventh-round finish.

In doing so, the supremely talented operator added Niyomtrong’s WBA strap to his collection, while also holding the WBO and Ring Magazine titles at 105lbs.

And despite remaining at minimumweight, the 28-year-old gave the impression that, along with the likes of Jesse Rodriguez and Naoya Inoue, he could become a force in the lower divisions.

Boxing legend Miguel Cotto has, after all, put a tremendous amount of faith into Collazo, representing the rising Puerto Rican star under his promotional banner.

As for his next opponent, Cano, 13-2-1 (4 KOs), is ranked number three with the WBO and 11 with the WBA, though is yet to test himself against a fighter on Collazo’s level.

Still, with the 27-year-old boasting a home advantage, their upcoming showdown could make for a classic Puerto Rico vs Mexico clash.

More likely, though, Collazo will come through his assignment with flying colours, before targeting potential unifications with IBF champion Pedro Taduran and WBC titlist Melvin Jerusalem.

But regardless of what comes next, ‘El Pupilo’ looks forward to putting on a thrilling display come fight night.

“I’m thankful to Miguel Cotto Promotions and Golden Boy for giving me the opportunity to showcase my talent in Cancún and connect with different fan bases,” Collazo said in a press release.

“We will make the most of this opportunity and show once again that we are the best in the 105-pound division in the world.”
