AFTER being sensationally stripped of his world middleweight title, mere days before his defence against Saul Alvarez on November 21, Miguel Cotto has hit back at the WBC.
“The organization wants four champions in every division just to earn a percentage from everybody. And then we have to pay for their mistakes. This is not fair to me. The WBC told me my offer was not reasonable to them,” he said. “They told me I was not going to be their champion anymore.“
Cotto revealed why the sanctioning body has withdrawn his championship. “It was all about money. The fee for this fight was absurd to me. And I prefer to keep the money in my account,” he explained.
While he will remain without a title, if Mexico’s Alvarez wins their 12 round contest on Saturday, the WBC will recognise “Canelo” as their champion. But Cotto dismissed their title saying, “I don’t need their belt. I have enough belts in my house. And with the money I saved, I can buy any belt I want. And I can be the champion of whatever I want in my house.”
The Puerto Rican warlord also rounded on Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya. “I am not disappointed by the WBC’s decision. I don’t need to pay attention to Oscar De La Hoya’s opinion,” Cotto declared. “He should take care of his own business. And I will take care of mine. I don’t stick my nose in Oscar’s business.”
