Meet Commando medal-winner Stephen Sayers
Jennifer Charlton

When and why you started boxing:
My dad made me go but once I was there I loved it. I loved the smell of the gym and being around real blokes.

Who is your favourite all-time fighter and why?
Mike Tyson! I still can’t watch his fights where he got beat, I turn the telly off if they come on.

What is the best fight you have seen, either live or on television?
I’m not sure, there are so many great ones.

What is your best achievement in boxing so far?
Boxing in front of my friends and family on my debut and also the lads I worked with in the military.

Who is the toughest opponent you’ve faced and why?
Darryl Sharp, my first professional opponent, but full respect to him you don’t get as many fights as he has without being a tough man.

What are your strengths and weaknesses as a boxer?
I work really hard during every session in the gym and what I lack in skill I make up for in hard work.

What is your best piece of advice for boxing training?
Give 110 per cent in every session, it’s all In your mind when you think you’re tired, push on.

What is your favourite meal and restaurant?
Any meal me mam cooks for me! Or when my lass makes me home-made soup and bread and butter. I had to say both of them, I didn’t want them fighting haha!

Who are your best friends in boxing?
The lads from Forest Hall, my brother Tommy, Micky, Lewis Terrance and Little John. Too many to mention all of them!

Which other sportsman would you like to be?
I have never wanted to be anyone else, I’m happy just being me.

What is the last film or television show you saw?
I love Only Fools and Horses, it’s a classic. Also Peppa Pig with the kids every morning!

Which actor would play you in a film of your life?
Tom Hardy, I think he’s cushty.

Have you ever been starstruck?
Yes, after my debut I met Alan Shearer! The words wouldn’t come out, it was worse seeing him than the walking to the ring!

When was the last time you cried, and why?
The week of my first fight. Libby, my little cuz, died. She was meant to be coming to watch but passed away and that hit me hard.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
I’d rather be judged by 12 than carried by six, advice I got from my uncle years back.

What is the worst rumour you have heard about yourself?
That my brother’s better looking than me.

Tell us something not many people know about you.
I won the Commando Medal when I was in the Royal Marines!
