Floyd Mayweather has spoken out on the current status of his rematch with Manny Pacquiao.
The American did, of course, claim a unanimous decision victory over his Filipino rival in 2015, before ending his Hall of Fame career with a record of 50-0.
Having become a five-division world champion, too, Mayweather has firmly cemented his legacy and, besides any financial incentives, there is little reason for him to step back through the ropes.
That said, a rematch between ‘Money’ and ‘Pac Man’ seemed set to take place in Las Vegas this September, with Netflix named as the official broadcaster.
Mayweather, however, had reportedly already agreed an exclusive rights deal with CSI Sports Events, who were expecting to produce the Pacquiao rematch and an exhibition match between Mayweather and Mike Tyson.
The 49-year-old was also set to an exhibition with Greek kickboxer Mike Zambidis on June 27, only for CSI to initially scupper the event by issuing a $4.65m lawsuit.
CSI alleged Mayweather was in breach of contract by agreeing to the Zambidis event, along with the Tyson exhibition and Pacquiao rematch, though a federal judge has now denied their attempts to block the bout, meaning it is now expected to be rescheduled.
The bout with Pacquiao remains the one that boxing fans would be most interested though, and while speaking with FightHype, Mayweather said his rematch with the Filipino is not entirely dead in the water.
“Manny Pacquiao’s a hell of a fighter. He’s a legend. Real good twitch – speed; power; movement. Whereas I’m very calculated – smart; intelligent; always got a gameplan.
“When you match those two [styles], you always get an interesting matchup. You can either get a war or you can get guys playing chess.
“That’s what happened when we fought – [it was] a chess match. When you put an event together like a Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao, anything can happen.
“I’m pretty sure it could happen again. Everything is up in the air.”
Pacquiao himself has also recently given his reaction to their rematch being postponed.
