ON Thursday night, Mikaela Mayer attempts to become a three-weight world champion when she challenges for Mary Spencer’s WBA super-welterweight crown. Now, two additional world titles have been thrown into the mix.
Mayer, 21-2 (5 KOs), had campaigned at super-featherweight until 2023, moving up in weight after suffering a first career defeat to fellow unified champion Alycia Baumgardner when bidding for undisputed gold.
Since then, Mayer has moved to welterweight and lost to IBF titleholder Natasha Jonas on her 147lb debut, before twice overcoming Sandy Ryan to claim and then defend the WBO welterweight strap.
The Californian now travels to Montreal to take on Canada’s Mary Spencer, 10-2 (6 KOs), on away soil, but just days before their meeting, it has been revealed that the vacant WBC and WBO belts will also be up for grabs, as per Top Rank.
“Thursday’s Mary Spencer vs Mikael Mayer showdown will now feature three world titles. In addition to Spencer’s WBA super-welterweight crown, the vacant WBO and WBC championships will also be on the line in Montreal, Canada.”
Both the WBC and WBO titles were last held by Cecilia Brækhus, who dethroned Ema Kozin at the beginning of the month with a unanimous-decision victory.
However, the 40-year-old Colombian then announced her retirement from the sport, hanging up the gloves after a legendary 18-year career and thus vacating the belts.
As for the remaining IBF title, that currently belongs to Ohio’s Oshae Jones, who can be expected to face the victor of the Spencer-Mayer for the undisputed super-welterweight title during 2026.
The full Spencer-Mayer bill, which also features separate bouts involving Arthur Biyarslanov, 19-0 (16 KOs), Wilkens Mathieu, 14-0 (10 KOs), and Mehmet Unal, 13-0 (11 KOs), can be watched for free via Roku, Vizio, Tubi and Pluto via the instructions below.
