Mark Dickinson set for English title defence against Troy Williamson

THE domestic super-middleweight scene is set for a shake up and Mark Dickinson could be poised to capitalise, but first he must make a defence of his English title against Troy Williamson.

The game Dickinson, 8-1 (2 KOs), travelled to Japan for a PrizeFighter tournament as a 6-0 prospect last year but fell short against former Japanese middleweight champion, Kazuto Takesako.

‘Boo Boo’ then returned to British soil and got back to winning ways in a six-rounder before stepping up and challenging English champion Reece Farnhill in Altrincham.

In one of the domestic fights of the year thus far, Dickinson and Farnhill battled fearlessly for the full 10 rounds, but it was Dickinson who dominated proceedings and walked away as the new English super-middleweight champion.

Boxing News understands that Dickinson will collide with former British super-welterweight champion Troy Williamson, 20-4-1 (14 KOs), in a first defence of the title in Newcastle.

Williamson is currently on a run of three straight defeats but will hope that a move up in weight could kickstart a fresh start in his career, following consecutive losses to Caoimhin Agyrako, Ishmael Davis and Jahi Tucker at middleweight.

Reigning British and European super-middleweight champion Callum Simpson may well move on from domestic level and vacate the Lonsdale Belt.

Should that happen, the English title-holder would be expecting to be challenge for the vacant British crown, adding further importance to Dickinson and Williamson’s clash.

Dickinson-Williamson is expected to be the highlight of the undercard on Matchroom’s Newcastle show on Saturday, August 9, with Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Pat McCormack, 7-0 (5 KOs), expected to headline a bill littered with northern-based prospects.
