Manny Pacquiao is attempting to turn back the clock against Barrios

MANNY Pacquiao’s return to the ring on July 19 is gathering pace as the Filipino veteran limbers up under the watchful eye of Freddie Roach. One of Manny’s key assets during his terrific title run was his blazing handspeed.

While the hands still fly at warp speed, the pads don’t hit back and concerns around Mario Barrios’ youthful prowess remain in some quarters. Pacquiao has looked less than impressive in exhibition contests and this is back to the real thing. A video from PBC has been sent out to calm any doubters who may be fearing the worst.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has gone on record stating that he expects a “handy” Barrios win, which is a sad situation given the Pac-Man’s previous exploits. While Manny’s speed and athletic gifts may still be present early on, the last time he stepped into the ring raises legitimate cause for concern.

In 2021, Cuba’s Yordenis Ugas seemingly sent the legend into permanent retirement. While Ugas was a dependable, strong champion, Pacquiao had dealt with the likes of Antonio Margarito, Miguel Cotto and more during his prime. Ugas’ accuracy was too much as he ground down the 40-plus star.

Coming back, aged 46, having just entered the Hall of Fame, is an even taller task. Serving as a senator or participating in non-competitive contests against kickboxing celebrities has not sufficed. Like so many before him, the urge to return to the ring has become too strong.
