LUKE CAMPBELL will fight Argenis Mendez, the former IBF super-featherweight world champion, on July 30 in Leeds.

“He lost to Robert Easter but he’s a good fighter,” promoter Eddie Hearn said of Mendez. “That’s a good fight.”

Campbell won everything going as an amateur, culminating in an Olympic gold medal. He lost to Yvan Mendy last year but came back with a win over Gary Sykes after linking up with trainer Jorge Rubio. This contest could put him on course to a world title challenge.

“I still like the Mendy rematch at some point,” Hearn continued. “I think that’s always nice to cross off the list and say eradicated but I think this is the kind of fight for Luke where he can come through and really stake his claim for a shot at the world title. I’d quite like him against [new WBC lightweight champion Dejan] Zlaticanin, Then the Crolla-Linares winner has got to fight Zlaticanin, so why not do Zlaticanin against Campbell, the winner can fight the winner of that.

“I think Campbell needs certainly one more, maybe two more [fights] under Jorge Rubio, it’s quite a big transition and I think you’ll see the real improvements in the Mendez fight.”
