AN INJURY to Daniel Lapin has inspired those at Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions to get creative, putting together a well-matched light-heavyweight contest between Liam Cameron and Troy Jones.
The pair will collide at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester, England, on November 1, featuring on the undercard of Joshua Buatsi vs Zach Parker.
Originally, the bill was supposed to see Jones, 13-1 (6 KOs), lock horns with Lapin, 12-0 (4 KOs), who comes off a contentious majority-decision victory over Lewis Edmondson.
But with the Ukrainian having ultimately withdrawn from their bout, it was announced just yesterday that Cameron, 23-7-1 (10 KOs), has been drafted in to save the day.
The 34-year-old, who was gearing up to face Mickey Ellison on the same card, has not fought since his devastating second-round stoppage defeat to Ben Whittaker in April.
It was just over seven months earlier, in fact, that Cameron had come agonisingly close to pulling off an almighty upset against Whittaker, only for their first encounter to end in a controversial technical draw through six rounds.
But still, the Sheffield man has shown plenty of promise since returning to boxing in 2023, especially when considering the mental and physical battles he faced during a five-year spell out of the ring.
As for Jones, the former English champion has amassed just one win – a routine points victory through six rounds – since his plucky performance against Ezra Taylor in May.
Back then, the 27-year-old gave a titanic effort, refusing to give his opponent even an inch of breathing space, before losing a unanimous decision in the away corner.
Joining Cameron-Jones on the Queensberry card, meanwhile, is another light-heavyweight encounter, this one in the form of a Manchester derby between Brad Rea and Lyndon Arthur, which also promises to deliver a closely-contested spectacle.
