BRITISH light-heavyweight champion Lewis Edmondson is open to defending his title against Liam Cameron, whose rematch with Ben Whittaker seemingly remains in the balance.
The saga between Cameron, 23-6-1 (10 KOs), and Whittaker, 8-0-1 (5 KOs), has escalated beyond what most could have imagined before their controversial encounter last October.
In fact, when they squared off on the undercard of Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol I, Whittaker was widely expected to come through his test in emphatic fashion.
But just as Cameron began to establish his control, catching the Olympic silver medallist with a series of sharp combinations, the pair were sent tumbling over the top rope in an abrupt end to the sixth round.
Ultimately, the stunning incident resulted in Whittaker suffering an ankle injury, leading to a highly contentious draw after he was forced to pull out of the contest.
Since then, a rematch between the two Brits has been heavily mooted, but now, it would appear that a promotional quarrel between Frank Warren and Ben Shalom could stop the fight from happening.
Edmondson, 10-0 (3 KOs), meanwhile, has expressed his interest in taking on Cameron after outpointing Dan Azeez for the British strap towards the end of last year.
The 29-year-old already has an upcoming assignment in Bournemouth, England, where he will make the first defence of his Commonwealth title against Oluwatosin Kejawa on March 1.
But still, now that he is looking to cultivate a long-term relationship with Queensberry boss Warren, who also promotes Cameron, Edmondson refuses to rule out a domestic dustup with the Yorkshireman.
“[Warren] was pushing for the British title to be on the line [for my next fight], but I think eight or nine opponents said no,” Edmondson told Boxing News.
“I’m not going to mention any names, but all you guys out there who said no: grow some balls.
“I believe that Cameron got offered to fight me, but he’s waiting for the Whittaker fight now.
“That’s a fight that could potentially happen. I like Liam – he’s a very nice guy. I believe he would’ve stopped Ben Whittaker in [their first fight]. Whittaker s*** himself.”
