Lamont Roach targeting weight jump after Gervonta Davis rematch

EARLIER this year, Lamont Roach Jr. put the first blemish on the professional record of Gervonta Davis. Now, the pair are set to run it back and Roach has revealed plans for a seismic move up in weight afterwards.

A reigning WBA super-featherweight champion, Roach, 25-1-2 (10 KOs), moved up in weight to challenge ‘Tank’ for the WBA lightweight crown back in March, in what many expected to be a one-sided affair.

However, despite a shock majority draw against the self-proclaimed ‘face of boxing’, it was Roach who left the ring disappointed – believing he had done enough to pull off the upset and dethrone the Baltimore southpaw.

Davis and Roach are now scheduled to collide for a second time this August, as Roach seeks justice and ‘Tank’ bids to save his blushes and re-affirm his pound-for-pound and superstar status.

Yet, in a stream on his Twitch channel, Roach declared that he would not be sticking around in the lightweight division if he is victorious in the rematch. Instead, ‘The Reaper’ opened up on his goal to move up to welterweight and challenge either Brian Norman Jr. or Devin Haney for the WBC title at 147lbs.

“After I beat Tank, I am fighting the winner of Devin Haney and Brian Norman, there you go.

“I am not going to say it again, y’all can clip it and do whatever but that is what I am doing. You heard it here first.”

“At 147lbs? Yes, at 147lbs.”

Norman looks to be one of the frontrunners for the Fighter of the Year award at present, having twice defended his title with two knockout wins already this calendar.

Although, the 24-year-old, who is boxing’s youngest current world champion, is poised for his toughest test to date in November, with a fight against Haney expected to be announced imminently.
