KIERAN Molloy has spoken of shock and devastation when he heard the news that his June 28 clash with Kaisee Benjamin in Pearse Stadium would not go ahead. The Irishman had been due to step up and contest the WBA European welterweight title.
More importantly, the bout was set on Molloy’s home territory. Prime pickings for such a strong ticket shifter.
However, on June 9, it was revealed by promoters GBM Sports that the show had been transplanted from the west of Ireland to Hull’s Connexin Live Arena. The official line furtively referenced “circumstances beyond our control”.
Molloy issued a statement across social media to his followers, detailing how the decision came as a complete surprise to him and his team.
Molloy, 26, who holds an 11-0 (6 KOs) record, has now split from GBM Sports and will pursue a fresh career path. After pointing to a strong media day in early June, Molloy revealed that tickets had been provided late on. Still, he had sold 2,100 out of his 2,500 allocation already when the cancellation move happened.
Molloy thanked DAZN commentator Adam Smith, the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association), BUI (Boxing Union of Ireland) and a host of sponsors for their time and support. Unfortunately, it will now all be in vain, as far as a Galway homecoming is concerned.
That long-term idea is not dead in the water. “I promise we’ll bring something special to Galway one day in the future when the time is right,” he added.
