FORMER world champion Keyshawn Davis has taken to social media, breaking his silence after what proved to be a disastrous weekend earlier this month.
The 26-year-old was supposed to defend his WBO lightweight title against Edwin De Los Santos, headlining a Top Rank show in his hometown of Norfolk, Virginia, on June 7.
But instead, ‘The Businessman’ hit the scales at 139.3lbs – 4.3lbs above the lightweight limit – and, in doing so, forfeited the right to retain his belt.
Even after that, the fighters’ teams attempted to remedy the situation, until De Los Santos’ promoter at the time, Sampson Lewkowicz, ultimately pulled the plug on their contest.
Davis, 13-0 (9 KOs), meanwhile, merely claimed that he had outgrew the 135lb limit, with the absence of a sincere apology largely contributing to the backlash he then received.
And despite his main event no longer going ahead, the American was nonetheless in attendance to see his brother, Kelvin Davis, drop a majority decision to Nahir Albright.
A backstage brawl then ensued just moments later, with Davis, whose victory over Albright in 2023 was overturned to a no-contest after he tested positive for Marijuana, appearing to be front and centre of the chaos.
In any case, the talented technician finally posted a statement on his Instagram story yesterday, insisting that he is genuinely remorseful for his behaviour throughout that weekend.
“For these past few weeks, I’ve reflected [on] my actions,” Davis wrote on social media. “I apologise to everyone that I’ve affected.
“I let my supporters down, especially the youth that looked up to me. I will set a better example.
“Thanks to everyone that’s still checking up on me. And in the end, the truth will reveal itself.”
Regarding the future of his still promising, yet somewhat damaged, career, it would seem that Davis is looking to make his mark up at super-lightweight, where none other than Teofimo Lopez, his fierce rival, holds the WBO strap.
