KATIE TAYLOR believes on Saturday night in Dublin can kickstart a new period for Irish boxing.
The undisputed female lightweight champion goes for all the belts at super-lightweight when she takes on divisional boss Chantelle ‘Il Capo’ Cameron at The 3Arena.
It’s another fight that places female boxing in the limelight with Taylor 22-0 (6) having been at the centre of so many. Gary Cully, Dennis Hogan, Caoimhin Agyarko, Paddy Donovan and Thomas Carty feature on the undercard giving a glimpse into the future for boxing in the whole of Ireland.
“I think we’re definitely turning a new leaf for Irish boxing. Hopefully this is the first night of many here at home in Ireland,” Taylor said at yesterday’s final press conference.
The 36-year-old is already a sporting icon and boxing legend but fighting back home has given Taylor a chance to see what kind of affect her achievements have had on people.
“At the public workout the other day, just looking at so many young fighters there, young girls that were watching the public workout. They’re looking up to myself and Chantelle and all of these other fighters, it’s absolutely fantastic.
“It’s great to be in a position where you’re influencing the next generation of fighters. They’re going to grow up with big dreams and big ambitions as well which is absolutely amazing. That’s what legacy is all about isn’t it, making the way for the next generation of fighters.”
Due to an injury Amanda Serrano pulled of her rematch against Taylor which had been scheduled for May 20. The plan was for Matchroom to still go ahead with the show but a replacement opponent was needed. Chantelle Cameron 17-0 (8) didn’t need much persuading to grab the opportunity with both hands. A win would take her career to levels she has never experienced.
“The May 20 date was slipping away,” Taylor recalled.
“I don’t use social media much but when I do use it, I guess I can make a big impact. I knew that Chantelle wanted this fight as well. It was a very easy fight to make. The minute the Tweet went out a few days later the fight was actually made.
“Two undisputed champions facing off against each other is absolutely huge for the sport and it has all of the makings of another epic fight. I never pick the easiest challenges – I want the biggest tests and the biggest challenges. I have a chance to become a two-weight undisputed champion on Saturday evening in front of my home crowd. This is so so special.”
