JOSHUA Buatsi has left the door ajar for a potential clash with the winner of Ben Whittaker and Liam Cameron’s eagerly anticipated rematch.
The light-heavyweight rivals squared off in a controversial encounter last October, when Cameron, 23-6-1 (10 KOs), produced arguably his career-best performance to make a mockery of the pre-fight betting odds.
In short, the 34-year-old introduced Whittaker, 8-0-1 (5 KOs), to by far his toughest test as a professional before both fighters were sent tumbling over the top rope.
As a result of the stunning incident, Whittaker exited the arena in a wheelchair after suffering an ankle injury, leaving Cameron forced to accept a technical draw through six rounds.
But now, the two Brits finally have the chance to settle their score at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, England, where the pair will headline a Boxxer card on April 20.
Yet despite earning a home advantage for his next assignment, doubts over whether Olympic silver medallist Whittaker can replicate his success in the professional ranks remain consistent.
Cameron, meanwhile, has labelled the 27-year-old as a ‘quitter,’ firmly believing that the highly-touted prospect faked his injury during their first encounter.
In any case, the intrigue surrounding their rematch has captured the attention of Buatsi, 19-1 (13 KOs), who suffered his first professional defeat to former world champion Callum Smith in February.
But despite finding himself on the wrong end of a unanimous decision, the Londoner nonetheless displayed his mettle in what swiftly became a captivating shootout.
And while, at this stage, he is yet to plot the next steps of his career, Buatsi refuses to rule out a possible showdown with the winner of Whittaker-Cameron 2.
“I’m not hard to find,” the 32-year-old told Sky Sports when asked about facing either fighter.
“I always said to people that only [Whittaker] would know [if he quit against Cameron]. So I think it’s a question for him. The most important thing is they’ve got a rematch.
“I won’t miss it. They get to square it and we get to find out the truth.”
