Conor Benn was halted inside five minutes in the first world title challenge of his career, and four-division world champion Roy Jones Jr has advised the Brit to pursue a two-bout plan, involving one ‘dream fight’, before then hanging up the gloves.
Benn was easily dispatched by Ryan Garcia in a daring bid for the Californian’s WBC welterweight title on Saturday, as Garcia closed the show in round two after flooring ‘The Destroyer’ with an authoritative right-hand.
Following the loss, Benn is expected to move up in weight and begin to campaign at either middleweight or super-middleweight as he looks to rebuild momentum and potentially come out on top in a trilogy showdown with fierce rival Chris Eubank Jr.
Speaking to Parimatch, Roy Jones Jr. suggested that the Brit should target a lucrative clash with UFC superstar Conor McGregor, and then finish his career with a third fight with Eubank Jr.
“A Conor McGregor fight would be a lot more in Conor Benn’s lane. I think if I had my dream wish for Conor Benn, it would be to fight Conor McGregor, and then to finish off with Chris Eubank and call it a day. That’s two big-time multimillion-dollar fights. Zuffa makes their money back that they put into him, and we call it a day.
“Conor Benn is gonna face two more brutal assaults unless he fights Eubank and somebody else like Conor McGregor. But if he doesn’t, he’s gonna face two more brutal assaults, because he’s gotta fight names for them to make the money that they paid him.
“Benn vs. McGregor is a really interesting fight. Depends on who trains them both, but it’d be a really interesting fight.”
Whilst ‘The Destroyer’ would undoubtedly accept a bout with McGregor, the latter tore his ACL in his MMA comeback fight against Max Holloway back in July and is not expected to return any time soon.
Meanwhile, Benn has already been offered a world title opportunity at a new weight-class, following his humbling defeat at the weekend.
