Conor Benn’s damning defeat to Ryan Garcia has got fight fans doubting whether he will ever go on to claim world honours, and four-division world champion Roy Jones Jr has had his say on the matter.
After two outings at middleweight against Chris Eubank Jr during 2025, this year was all about a controversial welterweight world title bid for Benn, who was installed as the WBC mandatory challenger at 147lbs despite not competing at the weight since 2022.
First, he collided with Regis Prograis in a 150lb catchweight affair and won a decision against the wounded New Orleans operator back in April, but this month Benn was halted by WBC welterweight champion Garcia inside two rounds.
Speaking to Parimatch following the loss to ‘King Ry’, Jones Jr declared that Benn will never be a world champion, but maintained that the Brit is still in a favourable position within the sport.
“He’s not gonna be a world champion, no. But he’s gonna make a lot of money for what he’s doing. A lot of guys will wish they had that same fate. He’s fortunate enough to have a situation where he can fight two more top-level fights.”
Jones then went on to advise Benn to pursue a much-rumoured super-middleweight trilogy clash against Eubank Jr and to make as much money as possible in two more bouts before hanging up the gloves.
“If I were him, I would just come back and run the Chris Eubank trilogy, for one. Then I’d get one more fight, and I’d be through with it. For him, make the money and be gone. That’s the best thing.”
Eubank has not fought since losing out to Benn last November, but he has recently been linked to fights against the likes of Kell Brook and Michael Zerafa, as well as an intriguing move to Benn’s former promoter Eddie Hearn.
