Roy Jones Jr is often credited as being one of the best fighters of all time, and he has now named who he deems to be the greatest.
Jones spent many years during the late 1990s and early 2000s as the pound-for-pound number one in the sport, as he claimed world honours at middleweight, super-middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight in his career.
He defeated fellow greats like Bernard Hopkins and James Toney along the way, and when he moved up to the banner division and dethroned John Ruiz to win the WBA crown in 2003, he became the first former middleweight champion to win a world heavyweight title in 106 years.
When it comes to determining his greatest of all time, it was another heavyweight that Jones selected, as he gave an always popular choice whilst speaking to Jay Midnyte.
“The greatest fighter of all time, the greatest athlete of all time in my book, always is going to be Muhammad Ali. It ain’t what I think, it’s what I know.”
Ali took the sport by storm in the 1960s and 1970s, becoming a three-time world heavyweight champion and claiming victories in some of the most iconic fights of all time, such as the ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ against George Forman and the ‘Thrilla in Manila’ against Joe Frazier.
After hanging up the gloves following his defeat to Trevor Berbick in 1981, Ali’s final record stood at 56 wins and 5 defeats from his 61 professional bouts, and it clear to see just why Jones, along with many others, view him as the greatest of all time.
