IRISH super-featherweight boxer John Cooney is in intensive care after his defeat to Nathan Howells on Saturday evening in Belfast’s Ulster Hall.

Mark Dunlop of MHD Promotions, who promoted the event, sent out a statement across social media explaining how the situation had unfolded: “John was assessed by the onsite medical team of the British Boxing Board of Control and swiftly taken to Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital for further treatment.”

Cooney was stopped in round nine when defending his Celtic title against Nathan Howells of Newport. Shortly after the conclusion, Cooney was given oxygen in the corner as concerns for his safety grew.

Mr Dunlop continued: “On arrival at the RVH it was discovered that John had an intercranial haemorrhage and underwent immediate surgery to relieve the pressure on his brain.

“John is currently in the intensive care unit and in the capable hands of the hospital ICU team.”

Due to the ongoing circumstances, this weekend’s scheduled show in Belfast’s Devenish Complex has been cancelled. Promoter Jay Byrne said, “John Cooney who participated in a professional boxing event in Belfast last Saturday is fighting for his life in I.C.U. and it does not sit right with anyone involved to continue with this week’s promotion. At times like these life is far more important than anything else.”
