JAMES DeGALE insists he will not be fighting a “struggling” Chris Eubank Jnr anytime soon as he is pursuing more world titles.
Eubank moved to super-middleweight earlier this year to claim the lightly-regarded IBO title against Renold Quinlan, while DeGale sits on top of the pack as IBF champion.
After defeating Quinlan on ITV’s first ever pay-per-view show, Eubank Jnr called out DeGale and claimed himself a world champion – something ‘Chunky’ balks at.
“That’s just silliness, it’s just crazy. Chris Eubank, he’s struggling at the minute, who’s he fighting next? I don’t really know where he’s going,” he told Boxing News.
“He’s stuck on ITV and that’s why he called my name out, it’s a massive fight, but it isn’t going to happen anytime soon. I’ve got bigger fish to fry.”
Eubank Jnr has not fought since his February victory over Quinlan and there has not yet been an announcement on his next fight.
DeGale is eyeing a potential rematch with domestic rival George Groves, who DeGale hopes to fight later this year should he defeat Fedor Chudinov on May 27 for the vacant WBA title.
Unbeaten Liverpudlian Callum Smith would also be another big fight for DeGale, as would a unification clash with WBO champion Gilberto Ramirez.
The Mexican is one of DeGale’s top targets as the Londoner – who made history when he became the first British boxer to ever win an Olympic gold medal and a professional world title – wants to win more belts and create a legacy.
“I’m in this for the titles now, titles and money,” he said.
“It’s simple The biggest fights, the world titles and the names. When I retire I want to be known as one of Britain’s best, I just want the big fights and the world titles.”
