JAIME Munguia returned from his first career loss by stopping Erik Bazinyan in round 10 at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale. Boxing back under the sole tutelage of Erik Morales, Munguia’s defeat to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has now been chalked off as a learning experience. Munguia displayed poise and patience when breaking down Bazinyan, an Armenian based in Canada.
Bazinyan’s left jab was working well. He just needed to unleash a right hand behind it. After four rounds, ESPN’s Mark Kriegel had the underdog up on the cards. It was a different fight once Munguia planted his feet and landed the power shots. Bazinyan was buzzed in round seven and Jaime quickly turned up the heat as the remaining rounds zipped by.
Caught by a strong left hook, Bazinyan was hurt and shipping heavy blows in the 10th as the Mexican laid on the pressure. Referee Thomas Taylor counted out Bazinyan, slouched on his knees, at 2-36 of round 10. At the time of the stoppage, Munguia was ahead by scores of 88-83, 87-84 and 86-85.
Munguia improved his record to 44-1 (35 KOs), while Bazinyan lost for the first time, dropping to 32-1-1 (23 KOs). The winner namechecked 168-pound rivals Caleb Plant and Edgar Berlanga, who both fought last weekend. Christian Mbilli is also on the radar.
Earlier in the evening, Richard Torrez beat slippery Joey Dawejko by disqualification in round five. The Philly veteran was thrown out by referee Wes Melton for excessively spitting out the mouthpiece.
Emiliano Vargas laid a beating on Larry Fryers, winning by fifth-round stoppage following a one-sided hammering to the Irishman’s head and body. A sharp left hand finally left brave Larry flat on his back.
