Jack Catterall and Shakhram Giyasov fight for the WBA welterweight world title tonight in Giza, with Rolando Romero elevated to ‘Super Champion’ earlier this week.
The sanctioning body confirmed the change just days before fight night, with Romero ordered to face the winner within 180 days. As a result, former super-lightweight challenger Catterall and unbeaten Uzbek contender Giyasov now have the opportunity to leave Egypt as recognised world champions at 147lbs.
For Catterall, it marks the chance to finally capture world honours after years operating around elite level, including a highly controversial defeat to Josh Taylor and a close loss against Arnold Barboza Jr. Giyasov, meanwhile, enters undefeated and regarded by many as one of the division’s most avoided fighters, with his relentless pressure and body punching expected to provide the toughest test of the Brit’s welterweight campaign so far.
