AFTER missing out on a second shot at super-lightweight gold, Jack Catterall will now move up to welterweight to face Harlem Eubank. However, the Chorley-based contender has revealed that his time at 140lbs may not be completely over yet.
Catterall, 30-2 (13 KOs), famously lost a controversial decision when challenging for Josh Taylor’s undisputed title back in 2022. Still, he remained on the cusp of the world champions since and seemed destined for another title challenge.
Victory in the rematch with Taylor and over two-time champion Regis Prograis saw Catterall thrust into a showdown with Arnold Barboza Jr. for the WBO Interim title back in February, where the winner would move on to a long-awaited world title shot.
Yet, Barboza was able to pull off the upset on away soil and hand Catterall a devastating defeat to derail his plans in the division and the Briton has now signed to take on Harlem Eubank, 21-0 (9 KOs), in a domestic dust-up in the welterweight division in July.
Speaking with Boxing Newsfollowing the launch press conference for that fight, Catterall explained that he has not closed the door on a return to 140lbs if the correct opportunity arises, believing his ideal weight to be between the super-lightweight and welterweight limits.
“Listen, I can make 140lbs, it is never the easiest, I don’t think that any fighter is telling the truth if they are saying that it’s not [difficult]. I think that [being at] 147lbs will make it that bit easier, and I am excited for it.
“It’s all about the fights and the right fights. If there is an opportunity to go to 140 or 147 then that is something that we will sit on with the team and decide but if there was a 144lb category that would be perfect!”
Catterall-Eubank takes place on Saturday, July 5, at the AO Arena in Manchester, where 31-year-old Catterall will get his first taste of life at welterweight and decide whether he truly believes he can claim a world title as a 147-pounder.
