ISHMAEL DAVIS believes he put in a better performance against Troy Williamson than his opponent on Saturday Josh Kelly did.

The two super-welterweights both have wins against Williamson on their record with each fight going 12 rounds. Kelly triumphed in December 2022 winning the British title while Davis got his victory in March this year.

On Saturday night at Wembley Stadium Davis gets the chance to upset the odds having replaced Liam Smith who was scheduled to fight the Sunderland boxer. Boxing News caught up with Davis earlier this week to discuss, among other things, the differences between Kelly and Williamson.

“It’s like positive and negative,” Davis said.

“They’re proper different. Troy’s a come forward fighter, Josh Kelly is a back foot hit-mover. He don’t like really getting hit whereas Troy’s there and he’ll take a few to give a few so it’s going to be a different fight.

“I’m going to have to adjust and get used to him. I feel like I did a better job on Troy than Josh did. [He] was just hitting and moving but I busted Troy up and that’s what I’m here for [a] real fight. So, hopefully he comes for it and we can give the fans a proper fight.”

And Davis’s unorthodox style gives the 29-year-old confidence that he has an edge over Kelly going into Saturday’s fight.

“I’ve got a lot of tools in my toolbox and all I have to do is implement them on Saturday,” he said. “He won’t be able to train for me because I’m a switch hitter, I throw shots from different angles, I can close you down properly. I’m not going to be following him around. He’s fast but I’m fast too so it’s going to be a really good fight.”
