Hughie Fury withdraws from Pirotton clash with a damaged hand

HEAVYWEIGHT contender Hughie Fury has reportedly withdrawn from his upcoming clash with Michael Pirotton, citing a damaged hand. The pair were supposed to meet in Hull on June 28 as part of GBM Sports’ rearranged Galway promotion.

Now, Talksport have revealed that the bout will not be taking place as Fury has pulled out almost a week away from the big night. Only days ago, Hughie’s father and trainer, Peter Fury, was discussing the merits of a possible world title tilt for his son.

“Hughie told everyone at the start of the year that there’s no stopping him now until we’ve won the world title,” Peter said.

Hughie concurred: “There’s no stopping me between now and me winning the world heavyweight championship – I’m on the title trail. If you follow heavyweight boxing, you’ll know Michael Pirotton is a dangerous young heavyweight.

“He’s making a bold move by coming after me, which I quite admire. He’s got nothing to lose and everything to gain. He’ll be a very hard night’s work on June 28th, but it’s my hand will be raised when it’s all over.”

Unfortunately, the comeback is now on ice just as the 30-year-old was gathering some career momentum on DAZN. Fury is on a seven-fight winning streak since losing to Alexander Povetkin in 2019. The last fight with Dan Garber came at a cost, as an aggravated hand injury has returned, and Hughie will take time to rest it instead.

This will also be a blow to Belgian Pirotton, described as a “power puncher” in promotional material. He remained confident during a recent social media interview, claiming that he felt ready to do to Hughie what Usyk did to Tyson and put it on him. For now, at least, it seems we’ll never know.
