GBM SPORTS promoter Izzy Asif has teased that discussions for Hughie Fury’s return, which is tentatively slated for December, have seen the emergence of ‘some huge names.’
The 31-year-old has not fought since the beginning of April, back when he secured a fifth-round stoppage victory over limited heavyweight Dan Garber.
After that, he was scheduled to enter another rather uninspiring contest in June, this time against little-known customer Michael Pirotton, but was ultimately forced to pull out with an injury.
As a result of his damaged hand, Fury, 30-3 (17 KOs), has seemingly spent the last few months recovering from the setback while, at the same time, launching himself back into the mix for a meaningful fight.
And according to his promoter, GBM boss Asif, it appears that an opportunity of such significance could arrive sooner than expected for the Mancunian.
“There might be [a GBM show] in December,” Asif tells Boxing News. “Who knows, maybe Hughie’s in a decent fight. There are negotiations as we speak. I’d like to see him out at least once before Christmas.
“Some huge names have been mentioned in the last four or five days [last week] for Hughie Fury. But he needs that activity; he needs that constant run of being injury-free in training.
“I’ve got a message on my phone right here, from a very reputable person in boxing, saying, ‘Any dates on [mystery fighter] vs Hughie?’ I can’t give anything else away.”
As we eagerly await an announcement on Fury’s next assignment, it must also be said that his career is in desperate need of a facelift.
His last notable outing saw him lose to Alexander Povetkin in 2019, while the former British champion’s only other two defeats, against Kubrat Pulev and Joseph Parker, arrived in 2018 and 2017 respectively.
Fury has, of course, already fought for world honours, though his majority decision loss to Parker seems a far cry from the level he has competed at in recent years.
Despite remaining unbeaten since losing to Povetkin, it is fair to say that the Peter Fury-trained operator has not exactly set the world alight.
