Filip Hrgovic has a unique insight into Moses Itauma’s ability following their contest for the IBF world heavyweight title.
Itauma entered the contest a significant favourite despite it being his first ever fight scheduled for twelve rounds.
He delivered on the hype through six or seven rounds, bamboozling the Croatian with speed and combinations. However, Hrgovic, seasoned as both an amateur and pro, weathered the storm and took his opportunity when the Brit began to tire, forcing a stoppage in round nine.
With Itauma now no longer undefeated, talk has turned to how he builds himself back to another world title opportunity. The current champions in the division, alongside Hrgovic, are Daniel Dubois, Agit Kabayel and Murat Gassiev.
Assessing the heavyweight landscape on the DAZN broadcast of Dubois’ blistering rematch win against Fabio Wardley, Hrgovic was critical of plenty of his rivals, but had nothing but praise for Itauma. In fact, he believes the young star will clear out the division entirely providing he is not mentally affected by the defeat.
“This is [the] future. This guy will be undisputed in a few years. No-one will ever beat him if he comes back mentally.”
Itauma’s team, including Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren, are currently preparing the 21-year-old heavyweight’s comeback, which is targeted for January.
Given exhaustion was part of his undoing, the team will continue to search for durable rivals who can provide rounds. As proven, it is not an easy job with a fighter of his talent. News on the opponent is expected in the coming weeks.
Hrgovic, meanwhile, has been ordered to defend the belt against Cuba’s Frank Sanchez. After, he says he wants unifications. Whether or not Itauma can pick up a belt to force a rematch remains to be seen.
