LEO Atang has signed professional terms with Matchroom Boxing. The 18-year-old heavyweight, a former member of Team GB, has opted against pursuing an amateur career and instead turned pro, it was announced this afternoon.

Taglining the teased announcement as the ‘Future is here’, fans were busy speculating over who was about to be unveiled. Some are already mentioning his name alongside Queensberry talent Moses Itauma. This indicates the clamour for a British heavy-hitter to step up and follow in the footsteps of Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury.

Matchroom have also linked their new man to the former unified world champion, describing the move as “Inspired by Anthony Joshua”.

While he may not bring along the same glittering Olympic gold medal as AJ, the York heavyweight, who boxes out of Legions ABC, is a five-time National Champion and legitimate puncher.

He has also established his name on the international circuit and will make his debut at some point this year if all goes to plan.

“I cannot wait to get started with Eddie, Sunny, Anthony Fitzpatrick and all the team at Matchroom Boxing. More importantly, I just want to get in the ring and show the whole world what I am all about,” said Atang.

“We put the work in and we put the hours in. I live the life. My mentality is – push myself the absolute limit and leave no stone unturned. I’m fit, I’m strong and I’l be ready to go with anyone tomorrow.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn added: “Leo possesses all of the attributes to make it to the very top, and we can’t wait to get this journey underway.

“Naturally there was a lot of interest in landing the signature of one of the very best prospects in Britain, and we’re delighted that Leo and his team have chosen us to guide his career.”
