Lennox Lewis hung up the gloves over two decades ago, but now one of just two men to have defeated ‘The Lion’ is planning on making an impression in the current heavyweight scene, at the age of 61 years old.
Lewis suffered a shock defeat to Oliver McCall back in 1994 when attempting to make a fourth defence of the WBC heavyweight world title, after being elevated into the position of world champion in late 1992.
Although, McCall would only make one defence himself, overcoming the legendary Larry Holmes before losing out to Frank Bruno at Wembley Stadium. Then, 18 months later, McCall and Lewis rematched for the vacant WBC title, but ‘The Atomic Bull’ came home empty-handed after a bizarre fifth-round stoppage.
That night remains as McCall’s solitary defeat inside of the distance despite accumulating 14 losses in his prolonged career and the granite-chined heavyweight veteran is now set for a fourth fight in two years, as he gears up to take on former heavyweight boogeyman, Ike Ibeabuchi, in Nigeria.
The combined age of the fighters in that bout will be a staggering 114 years old, but McCall believes that he will display that his remaining ability is still enough to beat today’s heavyweight champions, as per World Boxing News.
“I would love to fight and distribute my authentic abilities now at this age, at 61, that I’m still credible, and I can whoop heavyweight fighters,”
“I’m gonna show everybody, the whole world, but I’m originally from Chicago, Illinois, that I’m capable and able to knock out and beat contenders as well as former champions and champions.”
McCall-Ibeabuchi is set to take place on Thursday, November 26, but will only go ahead if 12,500 pay-per-views are pre-purchased by the end of the October.
