MATCHROOM BOXING and DAZN hope to soon announce the rest of their schedule for 2023 which will include details of the fight between Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez and Sunny Edwards.

A few weeks ago, the UK promotional outfit posted on their social media channels that the flyweight unification was signed and sealed. Since then, no other information has been released.

The highly anticipated fight is viewed as one of the best matchups in the sport right now with Edwards 20-0 (4) eager to make a name for himself worldwide.

At this week’s press conference to officially announce the Anthony Joshua-Dillian Whyte rematch Boxing Newsasked promoter Eddie Hearn for an update on Rodriguez-Edwards.

“We are trying to this week or next announce our entire slate from August to December,” he said.

“It’s difficult to do but we’re very close on a number of big fights in that slate. Obviously, Bam against Sunny is one. It looks like early December on the West Coast but that’ll be part of the big announcement.”

Speaking to BN last month the British flyweight said he had no problem with fighting in America and believes he has faced “scarier” fighters than the highly regarded Rodriguez 18-0 (11) in the past.

“I’m world champion. I want to travel the world defending and fighting the best in the world.

“Obviously conquering America and having that chapter of my career is obviously something on every British boxing bucket list. The size of the event, the platform, the profile, what the win would do for me and my legacy, my family name it’s 100 per cent the fight that I want.

“If I’m honest I feel that I’ve faced multiple fighters that are more scarier than a Bam Rodriguez. I genuinely believe that. I feel like a lot of people that have really watched boxing attentively as I have over the last decade or so would probably agree with that as well.”

The unbeaten Edwards proved a level above against a game Andres Campos in the fourth defence of his belt on June 10. A ninth consecutive points win marked his debut for Matchroom after signing with them earlier this year. Rodriguez picked up a vacant strap in April when out-pointing Cristian Gonzalez Hernandez in San Antonio. The 23-year-old suffered a jaw injury during the fight but will be ready to face Edwards later this year.
