Has Ryan Garcia parted ways with trainer Joe Goossen?

The fresh start for Garcia may not just be at a new weight class, writes Shaun Brown

A new trainer could be in Ryan Garcia’s corner when his campaign at super-lightweight restarts.

Last month Garcia came up short against Gervonta Davis in their multi-million dollar Vegas showdown set at a catchweight limit of 136lbs. After surviving a second-round knockdown Garcia fought back but was dropped by a body shot to end the fight in round seven.

Garcia made it clear afterwards he would be moving up a division to join champions like Josh Taylor and Regis Prograis. However, ESPN’s Mike Coppinger reported today from his Twitter account that veteran trainer Joe Goossen will no longer be training him and the two have parted ways.

Goossen replaced Eddy Reynoso following Garcia’s break from the sport for mental health issues and trained ‘KingRy’ for three fights. Those were a straight-forward points win over Emmanuel Tagoe in April 2022, the sixth-round knockout victory against Javier Fortuna three months later and the defeat to Davis. The 69-year-old has also trained the likes of the Ruelas brothers, Gabe and Rafael, Riddick Bowe and perhaps most famously with Diego Corrales who produced a heroic comeback to beat Jose Luis Castillo in their 2005 fight of the year.

Garcia, 24, certainly won’t be shortage of potential suitors. He may have found Davis too good on the night but there is talent and power to work with and improve. Fans will hope though that the next partnership will last a lot longer than two years.
