AN UNEXPECTED matchup between Harlem Eubank and Jamel Herring appears to be in the works, with the latter revealing that he is considering coming out of retirement.
As it happened, the former world super-featherweight champion took to social media just yesterday, confirming that he is in talks to face Eubank, 21-1 (9 KOs), in London.
“I just got a call to fight Harlem Eubank in London [at] 140lbs,” Herring, 24-5 (12 KOs), wrote via X. “Ehh… I’ll think it over.”
Herring made three successful defences of the WBO strap he claimed back in 2019, beating the likes of Lamont Roach Jr and Carl Frampton in what must be considered a solid title reign at 130lbs.
That purple patch came to an end shortly after he lost to Shakur Stevenson in 2021, though, as further defeats arrived against Jamaine Ortiz and Jackson Jon England before he eventually hung up the gloves last year.
And despite always being regarded as a towering super-featherweight operator, it remains clear that the 39-year-old would put himself at a sizable physical disadvantage if he is to face Eubank.
The Brit, meanwhile, comes off a technical decision defeat to Jack Catterall where, prior to both of them suffering cuts from an accidental head clash, it seemed that Eubank was firmly en route to losing a wide decision.
Yet still, the 31-year-old, whose last three outings have been fought at 147lbs, has seemingly maintained his ambition to become a world champion.
But before being presented with another opportunity to prove himself at world level, it would appear that Eubank is eager to test himself against a largely faded operator in the form of Herring.
Should their fight materialise, it could quite possibly land on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn 2 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, on November 15.
