Gone in 40 seconds: Mbilli cuts down Heffron

THE RESULT: Christian Mbilli blasted away Oldham’s Mark Heffron in round one of their 10-rounder at the Centre Gervais Auto in Shawinigan.

The Montreal-based French-Cameroonian landed a left hook to the body that took every ounce of fight from Heffron, who was counted out by Michael Griffin after 40 seconds of the first round.

Mbilli left the arena with the WBA International and WBC Continental Americas super-middleweight championships.

KEY MOMENTS: There was only time for one key moment (see above). A whipping rib tickler and the fight was over.

RECORDS: Mbilli improves to 27-0 (23 KOs). Heffron drops to 30-4-1 (24 KOs).

TALKING POINT: Brought over to keep the Mbilli train rolling, while Heffron wasn’t expected by many to win the contest, he was expected to offer a few more rounds of resistance.

Often portrayed as a bulldozer, Mbilli flicked out a couple of throwaway shots before unleashing the left hook finisher downstairs. It was a calculated, nuanced combination that displayed Mbilli’s diversity of attack.

QUOTABLE: “Everyone in that 168-pound division is trying to state their case, they’re jockeying for position, trying to stand out. Mbilli has about as good of a case as anyone right now [to fight Canelo],” broadcaster Corey Erdman stated.

Speaking exclusively in French during the post-fight interview, Mbilli thanked the crowd while remaining coy about his next move.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? Speaking of that next move, Mbilli needed to win to preserve a whispered August date with Sergiy Derevyanchenko and a possible route to Canelo after that. Heffron was not allowed to stand in the way of those plans or stand up for much of anything. Back to the UK drawing board for Mark.
