GIORGIO VISIOLI looks to take the next step in his promising career as he gears up to face Joe Howarth at the O2 Indigo, London.
The pair will headline a Matchroom Boxing card, which also features an intriguing clash between British cruiserweights John Hedges and Ellis Zorro, on December 17.
Entering the main event as an almighty favourite is Visioli, 9-0 (6 KOs), who many consider to be one of the most talented prospects on these shores.
Trained by Mark Tibbs, the flashy technician claimed a shutout points victory over James Wilkins, who Americans might call a ‘club-level fighter’, while making his US debut earlier this month.
Now approaching another 8-rounder, the 22-year-old must take care of business against Howarth, 14-1 (4 KOs), a capable lightweight who happens to be trained and managed by fan-favourite Dave Allen.
But while the Wigan man seems poised to cultivate a respectable career for himself, this does seem like a stepping stone for Visioli who, with any luck, could soon emerge as the next star of British boxing.
As for the co-main event, English champion Hedges, 11-0 (3 KOs), who comes off a solid points win over Nathan Quarless, will enter a career-toughest test against Zorro, 18-3 (7 KOs).
Former British title challenger Zorro lost a somewhat contentious unanimous decision to Aloys Junior, a ferocious puncher, back in July.
In that fight, the 33-year-old proved that he is by no means here to make up the numbers but, instead, has enough crafty skills to offer the majority of domestic operators an awkward night’s work.
Hedges, meanwhile, looks to dedicate this next victory – should it materialise – to the late Ricky Hatton, who was both his friend and trainer prior to his untimely passing.
“Winning the English title puts my name in with the best,” the 23-year-old said in a press release. “Zorro has been in with some top contenders and beating him in style puts eyes on me. This one is for Ricky!”
The rest of the Matchroom card will feature a selection of unbeaten prospects, including Tiah Mai Ayton, Taylor Bevan, Emmanuel Buttigieg, Adam Maca and debutant Connor Mitchell.
