On Saturday night, Isaac Cruz and Lamont Roach Jr battled to a draw in San Antonio. Gervonta Davis has reacted to the result after facing both men in the past.
Davis overcame Cruz back in 2021. ‘Pitbull’ became just the second fighter to go the distance with the Baltimore-born bruiser in what was Davis’ 26th professional outing, but ultimately lost a unanimous-decision after 12 hard-fought rounds.
Meanwhile, earlier this year, Roach handed ‘Tank’ the first blemish of his career, as the then WBA super-featherweight world champion controversially drew with the WBA lightweight titlist, despite seeming to get the better of Davis during the fight.
This weekend, Roach jumped up another weight division and challenged for Cruz’s WBC Interim super-lightweight strap but again could only muster a draw, with a third-round knockdown proving consequential for ‘The Reaper’.
On X, Davis shared his thoughts on the bout, believing that Roach was lucky to avoid a defeat on the judges’ scorecards.
“They only doing that [celebrating his draw with me] to keep him in the loop for other guys… his a** lost [to Cruz].”
Davis then went on to label Roach as a ‘gatekeeper’, before sharing his plans to rematch Cruz, hinting that a move up to 140lbs is around the corner once he has recovered from a knee injury.
A second fight between Roach and Cruz is much more likely given that ‘Tank’ has been inactive and appears largely unmotivated for top level fights. That was apparent when he signed for an exhibition bout against Jake Paul this year, however it was later canned after the 31-year-old was accused of domestic violence.
