Gervonta Davis’ return may be nearing an official announcement.

Davis’ last win came against Frank Martin, with a controversial March 2025 draw with Lamont Roach Jr representing his sole outing since – a contest where, in the eyes of most, ‘Tank’ was lucky to escape with his undefeated record and his WBA lightweight world title.

Prolonged inactivity due to external legal issues followed, which resulted in the WBA naming Davis ‘champion-in-recess’. Floyd Schofield and Lucas Bahdi were expected to collide for the vacant belt, with the victor set to be ordered to face ‘Tank’ in a first defence.

Yet, it has since emerged that Davis has instead been ordered to defend against Schofield, and The Ring’s Mike Coppinger has now revealed that talks are progressing for the showdown, with the autumn now targeted.

Whilst Davis’ inactivity is clear, Schofield has competed in just one professional round since November 2024, that being in a demolition of Tevin Farmer on a Jake Paul undercard almost 12 months ago.

He had been scheduled to challenge for the WBC lightweight world title, which belonged to Shakur Stevenson, back in February 2025, but Schofield pulled out of the affair during fight week due to an illness, replaced by Josh Padley – who was stopped after nine rounds of action.

While ‘Tank’s side has been quiet publicly since the order, Schofield’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, has confirmed that negotiations are ongoing, and said in his last update that they were awaiting a formal contract. If the teams can’t strike a deal, purse bids will be called on June 22.
