GEORGE Liddard and Kieron Conway are set to lock horns on October 11, featuring on a Matchroom Boxing card in Sheffield, England.
Their intriguing matchup was first mooted in May, not long before Conway, 23-3-1 (7 KOs), claimed his British middleweight title with a fourth-round stoppage victory over Gerome Warburton.
Prior to that, the 29-year-old had amassed a solid run of four straight wins, most notably beating domestic operators Linus Udofia and Ryan Kelly.
But there was an extra layer of spite, it seemed, when he stepped into the ring against Warburton, who ultimately succumbed to the vicious body attacks of his sharper opponent.
On that same night, meanwhile, Liddard, 12-0 (7 KOs), produced arguably a career-best performance against Aaron Sutton, flooring his man three times before securing an emphatic fifth-round finish.
In doing so, the 23-year-old became the mandatory challenger for Conway’s Lonsdale Belt and, sure enough, it would appear that official confirmation of their clash is close to materialising.
According to the British Boxing Board of Control’s latest championship circular, their fight, which was reportedly requested as a ‘voluntary defence contest’ by Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn, has now been approved for October.
In addition to that, Hearn has teased the possibility of a Dave Allen main event in Sheffield, insisting that Jeamie TKV would be their preferred opponent for later this year.
Allen comes off a destructive fifth-round stoppage victory over Johnny Fisher, while TKV suffered a controversial defeat to David Adeleye back in April.
With Adeleye gearing up to face Filip Hrgovic on August 16, though, it is highly likely that a showdown between Allen and TKV, should it get made, would be for the vacant British heavyweight title.
